RCA Work in Progress Show 2017
'Construction Part 1’, 2017, 120 cm x 120 cm, Wool, Cotton, Polyester, Lurex
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, Ornament is 'a thing used, or serving to make something look more attractive but usually having no practical purpose'.
Both knitwear and architecture are employed to protect the human form, however when knitwear techniques are applied to produce ornamental architectural elements such as a ceiling rose, the function and ability of the structure to support itself and serve its purpose is lost. 'Construction Part 1' explores how the combination of functional processes and objects can result in a complete loss of functionality, and questions whether Ornament can be superfluous when it is all that is left?
