Your Choice

2014, Cotton Yarn and Calico

A hanging comprised of hand-knitted cotton yarn, Your Choice investigates and exploits the juxtaposition of the stereotypically feminine occupation of knitting, with the often turgid and verbose language typically contained within political speeches. Constructed from sound bites from party conference speeches given by both the Labour and Conservative parties, the issue is raised as to how the parties confound and mislead their voters by continually reiterating their differences, whilst repeatedly and systematically pledging the same promises. The knitted aesthetic becomes a metaphor for those for whom the words and actions of our government cause the greatest impact; highlighting the debate over whether we, as a nation, have the opportunity for an independent choice at all.
